The novel Suburra, a noir. My review.

2017-10-09 • By

DeMy review of the novel Suburra, a noir set in Rome, by Giancarlo De Cataldo and Carlo Bonini of 2013, the book that inspired the TV series on Netflix.

I read the novel Suburra immediately when it came out. It is a sequel, or better a spin-off of a previous book by De Cataldo, Romanzo Criminale, which I enjoyed a lot. I recommend both the book than the movie featuring a bunch of the most talented Italian actors.

Romanzo Criminale is set between the Seventies and the Eighties and it’s inspired by, not to say based on, the real Roman gang called “banda della Magliana” which was nearly powerful as mafia at that times.

Suburra takes place in Rome nowadays and talks about the dangerous intersections among crime, money and politics.

Recent Italian films: Veloce come il vento

2017-05-28 • By

There are some recent Italian films that are going in a new direction. Good quality films with an eye on market.

You know what I think? Dramas, poetic comedy- dramas à la Beningni’s Life Is Beautiful and films with the last TV-comedian in the leading role are not enough. It’s time for something different.

Recently some Italian directors are finally experimenting an Italian way to other genres: science fiction (like They call me Jeeg) and action movies.

Among these I would place Veloce come il vento, also known with the international title Italian Race. Here’s the trailer in Italian. This is the first motor race movie among recent Italian films I remember. Actually, I think it’s the only motor race Italian film ever.

Which is interesting, if you think that there’s a whole Italian area, from Imola (where the film is set) to Mugello which is completely devoted to motors. Ferrari, Lamborghini and Ducati are there. Valetino Rossi is from there. Bikers are everywhere, parents put children into a go-kart at three years old. Why nobody talked about this before?

They call me Jeeg. A film review.

2016-06-14 • By

They call me Jeeg is a low budget sci-fi movie which was the 2016 sensation in Italian film industry.

Oh, Rome! Thinking of Rome do you imagine yourself speeding on a Vespa and eating ice cream sitting on the Spanish steps, surrounded by glorious monuments?

It’s time to see Rome from a different angle.

They call me Jeeg is a sci-fi movie set in Rome and with a Roman superhero. Here‘s the trailer.

The movie begins with the main character, a small time criminal named Enzo (played by actor Claudio Santamaria, you spotted him in 007 – Casino Royale)  running away from police. He cross Sant’Angelo bridge and dives into the Tiber, where he gets in contact with some radioactive material abandoned in the river.

Days later he discovers to have superpowers. It’s a classic.
